6 Effective Tips For ATPL Distance Learning
One of the most challenging phases for those completing commercial pilot training is the ATPL exam phase. During this time, you will complete 14 exams in a strict number of sittings, with each exam having a pass mark of 75%.
The ATPL exams can be completed as part of a full-time course or through distance learning, when you set your own pace of study and exam completion over 18 months.
At first look, the ATPL syllabus looks daunting. But, with a carefully organised study plan, achieving first time passes in all of the exams is achievable when distance learning.
We’ve talked to some pilots who have been through the ATPL phase of training and have compiled 6 effective ways to get the most from your distance studies.
1. Set A Revision Calendar
Creating and following a revision calendar allows you to work around other commitments such as work or family life. The average amount of study required for distance learners is around 15 hours per week, which gives you an idea as to how much time you’ll need to schedule. Once you’ve got a calendar in place, follow it strictly and you will slowly feel yourself getting into a suitable study regime.
2. Don’t Cram
ATPL material goes into significant detail and depth on each subject, so trying to rush what you are learning will not work in your favour. Material should be digested, taken in and then revised until you’re confident it’s sunk in.
3. Find Your Study Technique
Find out what your learning style is. Are you a person that loves to learn visually? Do you prefer to record your own voice and play it back through your headphones? Do you like reading a textbook? Find this out and you’ll be able to cater your studies to your true learning style.
4. Embrace Question Banks
Although the aim of the ATPLs is to gain a deep understanding of each subject to benefit your later career, question banks have become a key way to understand what to expect in the exam and get to grips with how questions are worded. There are many question banks available online, each with associated fees.
5. Vary Your Study Location
Research has shown that varying where you learn material can help the brain make associations between what it is taking in and where it is. Don’t feel restricted to a single desk or table, heading to the local coffee shop or buddying up with some other course mates may well help you unlock a little more.
6. Remember Why You’re Doing It
The ATPLs aren’t easy. There will be times during your studies where motivation is lacking and you’re struggling to see the end. Everyone experiences this, so always remind yourself why you’re in this position, and the fulfilled career ahead that it will lead to.
If you’re about to embark on your ATPLs or are in the middle of completing them, we wish you the best of luck and hope some of these tips have helped.
