What inspired you to pursue a career as a commercial pilot?

Pursuing a career as an airline pilot has been a lifelong dream for me. My interest in aviation was sparked when I was very young, often visiting airshows and aviation museums. This was backed up when travelling on holidays as a child when I was able to visit the flight deck and look in awe at the fantastic office view.

What did you do before starting pilot training?

After I finished A-Levels I started work as a Tesco delivery driver while completing my Private Pilots Licence.

Which training route did you choose to follow, and why?

I decided after much investigation that the modular path would be the better route for me. This was because I liked the flexibility of the modular route and had already completed some hours towards the Private Pilots Licence.

What challenges did you face before or during training?

The main challenge I faced during training was the uncertainty of job opportunities once qualified. I started my training just after Covid and it was always in the back of my mind what jobs would be available once I'd finished. To combat this I focused as much as I could on the current stage of training and made sure I came out of it with the best results possible to allow the most possible options in the future.

What were the highlights of your time in training?

I enjoyed every part of my training, but in particular, I enjoyed the APS MCC with VA. This was because it was the first time I really felt like an airline pilot operating in a multi-crew environment and it made me realise how close to the end goal I was.

How did the competencies you developed during your APS MCC help you afterwards?

I liked how the core pilot competencies were emphasised throughout my APS MCC, as this gave me a very good understanding of each one. This went on to be critical when preparing for airline interviews and into the Type Rating as each competency is tested in the simulator sessions - and as I’d got a good base knowledge it made the multi-crew environment and workload much easier to deal with, even in the most testing scenarios.

What have been the highlights since you started airline flying?

My highlight since I started flying with BA Cityflyer was my first line training flight. It was a surreal feeling flying the jet with paying passengers on board. Furthermore, landing at London City Airport with its famous steep approach is challenging but rewarding, especially as a first airline job.

What advice would you give to someone about to start APS MCC training?

Choosing where to undergo your APS MCC training is important, as the skills and competencies you learn will not only help you with interviews and securing your first job, but you will also carry them with you throughout your airline career. I cannot recommend VA Airline Training enough; I always felt well prepared, and finished the course feeling very confident about completing future interviews and Type Ratings.
